The Lubbock Police Department’s Major Crash Unit is currently probing a collision from Saturday evening that resulted in significant injuries to an individual. The initial dispatch to a traffic crash with injuries occurred at 10:12 p.m. on September 23rd at the intersection of Marsha Sharp Freeway eastbound access road and University Avenue.
According to preliminary findings, Justin Turner, 21, was found on the east side of University Avenue in the 400 block. During the same block of University Avenue, 20-year-old Raven Barrow was driving north.
Turner ran westward across University Avenue and was struck by Barrow’s passenger car. He was transported to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Justin Wade Turner, known affectionately as “JT,” entered the world on October 19, 2001, in Grapevine, Texas. Growing up in Bedford, he attended Bedford Heights Elementary, Bedford Junior High, and LD Bell High School, where he actively participated in varsity baseball. Justin’s passion for baseball persisted from the tender age of 4 until the completion of his freshman year in college, fostering enduring friendships along the way.
Justin attended Dallas Christian College after graduating from Bell. However, he eventually decided to transition to Texas Tech, expressing a desire for the full college experience. In 2021, he pledged and proudly joined the Texas Tech Sigma Chi chapter, continuing to build meaningful connections.
Tragically, on Saturday, September 23, 2023, Justin was involved in an accident that resulted in a severe brain injury. To their immense sorrow, his parents discovered that Justin, during his initiative to obtain a driver’s license, had become an organ donor.
In the early hours of Wednesday at 1:55 am, Justin’s generous decision breathed new life into as many as nine families. His heart, liver, pancreas, lungs (2 recipients), kidneys (2 recipients), and corneas (2 recipients) were among the gifts, along with his tissues, bones, and skin benefiting countless others.
Left behind are two deeply loving parents, numerous friends, and the Texas Tech Sigma Chi community, which is establishing a memorial scholarship in Justin Turner’s honor.
The memorial service is scheduled for October 9, 2023, at 10:00 am, at First United Methodist Church, 521 W. Pipeline Road, Hurst, Texas. Justin’s parents kindly request teammates attending the service to wear their game jerseys or team apparel, while others are welcome to don their favorite Texas Rangers attire.
