Texas Tech University is grieving the loss of its student, Justin Turner, who tragically passed away on Tuesday, September 26. The cause of his death was the injuries he sustained in an accident. 

Justin faced life-threatening brain injuries when he was hit by a car near North Overton in Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday, September 23. Despite being on life support, the 21-year-old succumbed to the severe consequences of the accident.

According to police reports, the Lubbock Police Department received an emergency call. Their first observation was an unconscious young white male beside a pedestrian.

According to the Lubbock Police Department, a robust young man, known as 21-year-old Justin Turner, sustained serious injuries when he was hit by a vehicle in the vicinity of North Overton on Saturday night.

The Lubbock Police Department’s Major Crash Unit is currently probing a collision from Saturday evening that resulted in significant injuries to an individual. The initial dispatch to a traffic crash with injuries occurred at 10:12 p.m. on September 23rd at the intersection of Marsha Sharp Freeway eastbound access road and University Avenue.

According to preliminary findings, Justin Turner, 21, was found on the east side of University Avenue in the 400 block. During the same block of University Avenue, 20-year-old Raven Barrow was driving north. 

Turner ran westward across University Avenue and was struck by Barrow’s passenger car. He was transported to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Jim Turner, Justin’s father, expressed his pride in his son, stating, “JT was a remarkable individual and an outstanding athlete. His mother and I are deeply proud.” Turner, aged 21, was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in Lubbock around 10:15 p.m. on September 23, as reported by KCBD. He was rushed to the hospital with a life-threatening brain injury.

On the evening of September 26, a few hours before Turner was taken off life support, his Sigma Chi fraternity brothers held a candlelight vigil in his honor. Sigma Chi President Peyton Hanna shared, “He always radiated a bright smile, positive energy, and was constantly cracking jokes. He never hesitated to prioritize his brothers.”

Jim Turner expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the Texas Tech community, acknowledging how many people came forward to share the impact Justin had on their lives. “Everybody has helped me understand what an exceptional kid I have,” Jim Turner remarked.

Born in Grapevine and raised in Bedford, Justin Turner played baseball at Dallas Christian College before transferring to Texas Tech. Jim Turner revealed in a public social media post that his son was a full organ donor, potentially impacting up to nine lives, according to the obituary.

To aid in covering medical expenses, Turner’s Sigma Chi fraternity brothers established a GoFundMe. Describing Turner as “a vibrant soul, full of dreams and aspirations,” the campaign highlighted the profound impact of his organ donation, stating, “Through this remarkable gift, he continues to be a hero, leaving an enduring impact on the world.”

Justin Turner Obituary

Justin Wade Turner, known affectionately as “JT,” entered the world on October 19, 2001, in Grapevine, Texas. Growing up in Bedford, he attended Bedford Heights Elementary, Bedford Junior High, and LD Bell High School, where he actively participated in varsity baseball. Justin’s passion for baseball persisted from the tender age of 4 until the completion of his freshman year in college, fostering enduring friendships along the way.

Justin attended Dallas Christian College after graduating from Bell. However, he eventually decided to transition to Texas Tech, expressing a desire for the full college experience. In 2021, he pledged and proudly joined the Texas Tech Sigma Chi chapter, continuing to build meaningful connections.

Tragically, on Saturday, September 23, 2023, Justin was involved in an accident that resulted in a severe brain injury. To their immense sorrow, his parents discovered that Justin, during his initiative to obtain a driver’s license, had become an organ donor. 

In the early hours of Wednesday at 1:55 am, Justin’s generous decision breathed new life into as many as nine families. His heart, liver, pancreas, lungs (2 recipients), kidneys (2 recipients), and corneas (2 recipients) were among the gifts, along with his tissues, bones, and skin benefiting countless others.

Left behind are two deeply loving parents, numerous friends, and the Texas Tech Sigma Chi community, which is establishing a memorial scholarship in Justin Turner’s honor.

The memorial service is scheduled for October 9, 2023, at 10:00 am, at First United Methodist Church, 521 W. Pipeline Road, Hurst, Texas. Justin’s parents kindly request teammates attending the service to wear their game jerseys or team apparel, while others are welcome to don their favorite Texas Rangers attire. 

The Sigma Chi community is encouraged to wear either their Sigma Chi shirts or the JT Strong t-shirt; however, Houston Astros apparel is respectfully discouraged.
